Flights to Malawi
Malawi is a small African nation located in southeast Africa. Lake Nyasa forms the eastern border of the country keeping it from being totally landlocked. The climate is tropical and people are friendly; Malawi is called the "warm heart of Africa"
The political capital of Malawi is Lilongwe, the economic capital is Blantyre. Both are bustling modern cities with vestiges of colonial Malawi interspersed throughout. A popular tourist destination is Cape Maclear located at the southern end of Lake Nyasa. A lush, relaxed town it is favored by locals and tourists alike. Fishing is popular here as is boating. You will find lots of people enjoying the sun and beaches.
There are many places you will want to visit while in Malawi. The Majete Wildlife Park is similar to taking a safari. Guides will escort you around the park and show you the wildlife living in its natural habitat. Zomba Plateau is a wonderful and lush example of the Malawi landscape. Mount Mulanje is the highest mountain in southern Africa. While you do not need to be a professional climber it is a rigorous hike to the top. You can hire guides and porters for the trip. Oddly enough, it is said that the best pizza in Malawi is located here at Pizza Basilica.
The national food is nsima, or maize, prepared to an oatmeal texture. It is rolled into balls with your hand and dipped into relishes. Mahewu is a local drink made from maize meal. It is said to be very refreshing and sweet. Alcohol is available in Malawi, even in Muslim quarters. Most alcohol is imported, not made inside the country.
The international airport is located in the city of Lilonqwe. There are no direct flights and you will have to connect through Johannesburg, South Africa or Nairobi, Kenya. You will be required to pay a thirty dollar departure fee at the airport when you depart. This fee must be paid in US dollars.
The people of Malawi are very welcoming and friendly. They will go out of their way to make you comfortable. Please remember that this is a Muslim country and you should try to dress modestly in cities and towns. Enjoy!
